Things to Do In and Around Holderness

Holderness wraps around the southern end of Squam Lake and Little Squam, the quiet, largely undeveloped waters made famous by the film On Golden Pond. It is a small village with an outsized natural draw — a nationally known science center, protected shoreline, and some of the best short-hike lake views in the state. Most of what makes Holderness special is outdoors and close at hand.

Squam Lake and Little Squam

Squam is the second-largest lake in New Hampshire and one of its most protected — heavily forested shoreline, minimal commercial development, and a stillness that has kept it feeling wild. Its calm coves and clear water are the reason On Golden Pond was filmed here, and the reason it remains a favorite for canoeing, kayaking, and unhurried swimming. Little Squam, just downstream, offers the same quiet character on a smaller scale.

Squam Lakes Natural Science Center

At the junction of Route 3 and Route 113, this 200-plus-acre campus is the only AZA-accredited institution in northern New England. Its live-animal exhibit trail features New Hampshire natives — bobcats, bears, otters, mountain lions, and birds of prey, most of them rescued or non-releasable — alongside gardens and walking trails. The center also runs guided Squam Lake cruises with a good chance of spotting loons and bald eagles.

Squam Lakes Association trails and programs

The Squam Lakes Association stewards a network of hiking trails around the watershed and offers programs, camping, and boat-based experiences that get you onto and around the lake. It is the practical starting point for exploring the region on foot or water, with trail maps and guidance for everything from short family walks to longer ridge hikes.

West Rattlesnake Mountain

The area's signature short hike — roughly two miles round trip with about 450 feet of gain via the Old Bridle Path off Route 113. The open ledges at the top deliver a wide, close-up view over Squam Lake and the surrounding hills, which is why it is one of the most-loved family hikes in the Lakes Region. The trailhead sits a few miles north of the village.

The village on Route 3

Holderness proper is a compact village strung along Route 3 near the Squam River bridge, with a handful of inns, restaurants, a market, and the local landmarks that anchor daily life. It is small by design — the kind of place where the general store and the lake are the center of town.

Plymouth just down the road

Everyday services sit only minutes away in neighboring Plymouth, home to Plymouth State University, a hospital, grocery stores, and I-93 access. That proximity lets Holderness stay quiet and residential while keeping the practical necessities of daily life within an easy drive.

Living in Holderness Year-Round

Winter

Winters are cold and snowy, and the lake freezes solid enough for ice fishing and skating in a good year. The trails around Rattlesnake and the science center campus become quiet snowshoe and cross-country routes, and downhill skiing at Waterville Valley and Loon is a short drive north. Life turns inward and calm — this is the off-season for the seasonal crowd, and the village feels like it belongs to the year-round residents again.

Spring

Snowmelt swells the Squam River and the woods green up through April and May. It is mud season on the trails — West Rattlesnake and the Rattlesnake network are best avoided until they firm up to prevent erosion — but the lake reawakens and the loons return to nest. Days lengthen quickly and the summer businesses begin to reopen.

Summer

Summer is Holderness at its liveliest, when lakefront homes fill and Squam is at its best for paddling, swimming, and boating. The science center and its lake cruises draw families, and the short hikes reward early starts with cool ledges and long views. Even at peak season Squam stays quieter and less developed than the busier Winnipesaukee shoreline nearby.

Fall

Autumn may be the region's finest season — the hardwood ridges around the lake turn deep red and gold, and the ledges on West Rattlesnake become a prime foliage overlook. Crisp, clear days are ideal for hiking and for the last paddles of the year before the water cools. The science center trails stay open into early November before the quiet of the off-season settles back in.
