Things to Do In and Around Laconia

Laconia is the commercial heart of the Lakes Region, wrapped around the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee, Lake Winnisquam, and Lake Opechee. It has the everyday services a full-time resident needs and the waterfront draws that pull visitors north all summer. Here is where locals and newcomers actually spend their time.

Weirs Beach & the M/S Mount Washington

Weirs Beach is Laconia's classic lakefront village — a public beach, an arcade strip, and a boardwalk that runs the length of the docks along Lakeside Avenue. It's also the home port of the M/S Mount Washington, the 230-foot flagship that runs scenic and dinner cruises on Winnipesaukee from late May through October, with stops at Meredith, Center Harbor, Wolfeboro, and Alton Bay.

Two Big Lakes and Public Beaches

Living here means water on both sides — Lake Winnipesaukee, the largest lake in the state, to the east, and quieter Lake Winnisquam to the west. Between the two you're rarely far from a public beach, a boat launch, or a swimming spot, and the smaller Lake Opechee sits right in town.

Gunstock Mountain Resort

Gunstock, in neighboring Gilford, is roughly a 15-minute drive and doubles as a year-round anchor. Winter brings skiing and snowboarding across nearly 50 trails; the warm months add a mountaintop zip line, aerial ropes course, mountain biking, and hiking with long views over the lakes.

Downtown Laconia & the Colonial Theatre

Downtown has seen real investment in recent years, anchored by the restored Colonial Theatre — a 1914 house reopened after a multi-million-dollar renovation, seating around 750 for concerts, comedy, and theatre. The surrounding blocks hold local restaurants, shops, and the mill-district architecture that gives the city its character.

Laconia Motorcycle Week

Every June, Laconia hosts one of the country's oldest and largest motorcycle rallies, a tradition tracing back to 1916. For nine days the city and Weirs Beach fill with riders and hundreds of thousands of visitors — worth planning around whether you want to be in the middle of it or well clear of it.

Everyday Services & Lakes Region General Hospital

As the region's hub, Laconia carries the practical infrastructure — grocery and big-box shopping, restaurants, and Lakes Region General Hospital, the area's main medical center. It's the reason many buyers choose Laconia over smaller surrounding towns: you can live near the lakes without driving far for the basics.

Living in Laconia Year-Round

Winter

Winters are cold and snowy, and the town settles into a quieter rhythm once the summer crowds are gone. Gunstock is only about 15 minutes away for skiing and snowboarding, and when the lakes freeze solid, ice-fishing bob houses appear out on Winnipesaukee and Winnisquam. It's a genuine four-season climate — plan on plowing, and on real winter driving.

Spring

Spring is the region's slow season: mud and melting snow give way to ice-out on the lakes, usually sometime in April. The town gradually wakes up as docks go back in and the M/S Mount Washington readies for its late-May launch. It's an unhurried stretch before the summer swell arrives.

Summer

Summer is Laconia at full volume. The population and traffic swell with lake visitors, Weirs Beach hums, and boats crowd the water — and in mid-June, Motorcycle Week brings hundreds of thousands of riders to town for nine days. It's lively and social, though residents learn which weekends to run errands early and where to find the quieter beaches.

Fall

Fall is many locals' favorite season. Foliage lights up the hills around both lakes, the cruises keep running into October, and the summer crowds thin out while the restaurants and shops stay open. Crisp days and open roads make it prime time for hiking Gunstock and driving the lakeshore.
