Things to Do In and Around Alexandria

Alexandria is a small, rural town southwest of Newfound Lake, best known as the home base for Mount Cardigan's hikes. It is inland and wooded rather than on the water, and much of what draws people here is the mountain, the forest, and the affordable space you get away from the lakefront.

Mount Cardigan

Cardigan's bare granite dome (3,155 feet) and its summit fire tower give 360-degree views over the White Mountains, the Lakes Region, and into Vermont and Maine on clear days. Alexandria is home to the AMC Cardigan Lodge, run by the Appalachian Mountain Club since 1934, at the mountain's eastern foot on Shem Valley Road. From the lodge's 1,200-acre reservation you can pick up the steep Holt Trail or the gentler Manning Trail — note the shortest, busiest West Ridge route is on the far side of the mountain in Orange.

Newfound Lake, a short drive east

One of the cleanest, clearest lakes in New Hampshire and the third-largest lying entirely within the state, Newfound is only a short drive east through Bristol. Alexandria itself is off the shoreline, so most residents reach the water by driving to a beach, a boat launch, or one of the neighboring lake towns.

Wellington State Park

On the southwest shore in Bristol, Wellington has the largest freshwater swimming beach in the New Hampshire state park system, along with picnic areas, non-motorized boating, and a hiking trail that connects toward Welton Falls and Cardigan. It is open roughly mid-May through Columbus Day and is the easiest lake day for Alexandria families.

Rural farms, forest, and the Fowler River

This is quiet, working countryside — woodlots, small farms, dirt roads, and the Fowler River running down out of the hills. It rewards people who want privacy, room for animals or a garden, and easy access to trails and back roads rather than shops and nightlife.

Snowmobiling and winter trails

Alexandria's woods and old logging roads tie into the regional snowmobile trail network, and the same terrain draws cross-country skiers and snowshoers. Cardigan Lodge's historic Civilian Conservation Corps ski trails on the mountain's east side are part of the winter draw.

Affordability and space

Compared with the lakefront towns just east, Alexandria is noticeably more affordable, and you generally get more land and privacy for the money. The trade-off is honest: it is rural and off the lake, so you buy space and quiet rather than a dock and a village center.

Living in Alexandria Year-Round

Winter

Winters are real and rural — snow, cold, and back roads that demand a capable vehicle and a plan for plowing. Snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing come right to the door, and Cardigan's summit draws winter hikers with microspikes and snowshoes. Services and the nearest grocery run are a drive away in Bristol or Plymouth.

Spring

Spring is muddy and unhurried as the frost comes out of the dirt roads and the Fowler River runs high with snowmelt. Trails can be soft and wet well into the season, so lower woods walks tend to open before the higher ledges dry out. It is a quiet stretch before the summer visitors arrive.

Summer

Summer is the busy season, with hikers heading up Cardigan and lake days a short drive east at Wellington and around Newfound. Days are warm, evenings cool, and the woods stay green and shaded. Alexandria stays calmer than the lakeshore towns, which is part of the appeal for people who want to be near the action without living in it.

Fall

Foliage is the highlight — Cardigan's open summit gives one of the best autumn panoramas in the region, and the surrounding hills turn color through late September and October. The air is crisp, the crowds thin after Columbus Day, and it is prime hiking weather. It is a good time to see the town at its quiet best before winter sets in.
