Things to Do In and Around Lincoln

Lincoln sits at the western gateway to the White Mountains, right where the Kancamagus Highway begins and Loon Mountain rises above town. For a place of its size, it packs in an unusual amount — big-mountain skiing, a national forest at the doorstep, and a strip of family attractions along Route 112 that keep the town busy in every season.

Loon Mountain Resort

Loon is the anchor of Lincoln life, offering 2,100 vertical feet of skiing and riding across three peaks just three miles off I-93. In the warmer months the mountain shifts to a scenic gondola, the Aerial Forest Adventure Park, ziplines, and mountain biking, making it a genuinely year-round draw.

The Kancamagus Highway

The Kancamagus — the Kanc — starts right in Lincoln and runs 32 miles east to Conway, climbing nearly 3,000 feet through the White Mountain National Forest with no gas, food, or lodging along the way. It is one of the most celebrated scenic drives in the Northeast, with overlooks, waterfalls, and trailheads the whole way across.

Franconia Notch State Park

Just north on I-93, Franconia Notch holds some of the region's signature sights: the Flume Gorge boardwalk, the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway, Echo Lake, and the former site of the Old Man of the Mountain. A paved recreation path runs about nine miles through the notch, making for an easy, mostly downhill ride when you start from the north.

Family Attractions on Route 112

The stretch of Route 112 through town is lined with attractions that make Lincoln a family favorite — the Hobo Railroad's 80-minute rides along the Pemigewasset River, Whale's Tale Waterpark in summer, and the LED-lit Ice Castles that appear in the Lincoln–Woodstock area most winters. Clark's Bears and mini-golf round out an afternoon when the weather turns.

Hiking and the Pemigewasset Wilderness

The Lincoln Woods trailhead, at the start of the Kanc, is the main entry into the Pemigewasset Wilderness — a vast roadless tract laced with trails to backcountry summits and river crossings. Closer to town, shorter classics like Georgiana Falls and Mount Pemigewasset give you a real White Mountain hike without a full-day commitment.

Walkable Lincoln Village

Lincoln's compact village center means restaurants, breweries, shops, and the Jean's Playhouse theater are all within an easy walk, which is rare for a mountain town. After a day on the trails or the slopes, you can leave the car parked and find dinner on foot.

Living in Lincoln Year-Round

Winter

Winter is Lincoln's headline season, with Loon drawing skiers and riders from Thanksgiving into spring and the village humming with visitors on weekends. Snow is reliable and deep here, so plowing, plentiful cold-weather gear, and the rhythm of a busy resort town are simply part of daily life.

Spring

Spring is the quiet shoulder season — mud and melt give way to high, roaring rivers and the reopening of the Franconia Notch bike path. Town slows noticeably between ski season and summer, which locals tend to treasure as a stretch of breathing room.

Summer

Summer brings the waterpark, the gondola, the railroad, and a full slate of festivals, along with easy access to swimming holes and cool mountain hiking. Days are warm and the tourist economy is in full swing, so the town feels lively rather than sleepy.

Fall

Foliage season is the peak of the year on the Kancamagus, and traffic through Lincoln swells accordingly as leaf-peepers pour in for the drive. The color is genuinely spectacular, and being right at the western end of the highway means you can catch it early in the morning before the crowds arrive.

Getting Here & Around Lincoln

Lincoln sits directly on I-93 at Exit 32, which gives it some of the easiest highway access of any town in the White Mountains.
