Things to Do In and Around Jackson
Jackson is a storybook village tucked into the Mount Washington Valley, reached by driving through its own covered bridge. It packs an outsized share of the White Mountains' best skiing, hiking, and country-inn charm into a small footprint — with the region's biggest resorts and the highest peak in the Northeast a short drive up Route 16.
The Honeymoon Covered Bridge
The village's signature entrance, this covered bridge over the Ellis River was built in 1876 and is one of the most photographed landmarks in the White Mountains. It earned its name from the tradition of couples kissing beneath it for good luck, and it still frames the drive into Jackson Village today.
Jackson Ski Touring Foundation
One of the top cross-country networks in the country, this community nonprofit grooms roughly 150 kilometers — more than 60 miles — of Nordic and snowshoe trails that thread through the village, along the rivers, and into the surrounding hills. Many of the trails connect directly to the inns, so you can ski from your doorstep.
Black Mountain
A historic, independent alpine area on the edge of the village, Black Mountain traces its skiing back to 1935 and is often called the oldest ski area in New Hampshire. Its family-friendly terrain and Presidential Range views make it a low-key contrast to the larger resorts nearby.
Jackson Falls
Just above the village along Carter Notch Road, the Wildcat River tumbles down a series of granite ledges. It is a favorite spot to cool off and picnic in summer and to take in the foliage in fall, all within walking distance of the village center.
Mount Washington & Pinkham Notch
Route 16 climbs north from Jackson into Pinkham Notch, the launch point for hikes up the Northeast's highest peak — including the classic Tuckerman Ravine Trail — and the base of the Mount Washington Auto Road. The Pinkham Notch trailheads sit roughly a dozen miles up the valley, putting serious alpine hiking within easy reach.
Story Land & the Valley Resorts
The beloved family theme park Story Land is just down the road in Glen, where Routes 16 and 302 meet, and the big Mount Washington Valley ski resorts — Wildcat, Attitash, and Cranmore among them — are all a short drive away. Back in the village, classic inns and restaurants like the Shannon Door and Red Fox anchor a genuine country-village dining scene.
Living in Jackson Year-Round
Winter
Winter is Jackson's headline season, and the village leans into it — groomed Nordic trails run right through town, Black Mountain spins its lifts, and the larger resorts are minutes away. Expect real snow, cold clear nights, and a steady flow of visitors, so plowing, heating, and mud-room living are part of everyday life here.
Spring
Spring comes late and unhurried in the mountains, with snow lingering in the high country while the valley thaws into mud season. The rivers run high and loud with snowmelt, and quiet returns to the village between the ski and summer crowds — a good stretch for locals to catch their breath.
Summer
Summer is cool, green, and outdoor-focused, with hiking, swimming at Jackson Falls, and long days exploring the White Mountain National Forest. The village hums with inn guests and day-trippers, but mornings and evenings stay peaceful, and the higher elevation keeps the heat mild compared with points south.
Fall
Autumn is spectacular here, drawing leaf-peepers to the covered bridge, the falls, and the surrounding ridgelines when the maples and birches turn. It is one of the busiest and most beautiful times to be in the valley, with crisp air and full inns before the first snows arrive.
