Living in Canterbury, NH

Canterbury began as a militia timber fort and trading post run by Capt. Jeremiah Clough on a hill near Canterbury Center, where the Pennacook people came to trade, and the town was incorporated in 1741. Canterbury Shaker Village, established in 1792, is now a museum founded in 1969, with 25 original buildings, four reconstructed ones and 694 acres of forest, fields, gardens and mill ponds under permanent conservation easement. The Canterbury Historical Society runs the Elizabeth Houser Museum in the old Center Schoolhouse, a one-room school. Ayers State Forest covers 50 acres and Shaker State Forest 226.5 acres. The highest ground, about 1,390 feet, is an unnamed summit near Forest Pond on the northern border, and Loudon was formed in 1773 from land taken from Canterbury.
