Welcome to Hancock

Set on the Contoocook River in Hillsborough County, Hancock was split off from Peterborough and incorporated in 1779 and named for John Hancock, who owned land here. Its small village at NH Routes 123 and 137 is almost entirely on the National Register as the Hancock Village Historic District, and the Meetinghouse bell, cast by Paul Revere, still rings on the hour. Beyond the village, the town reaches west to Nubanusit Lake and up to Skatutakee Mountain.

Living in Hancock, NH

Main Street is the heart of Hancock, and almost every building along it belongs to the Hancock Village Historic District. Paul Revere's bell number 236 hangs in the Meetinghouse and chimes every hour, day and night, and instead of paved sidewalks, gravel paths lead from house to house. The Hancock Historical Society Museum is in town, as is a dish of the Very Long Baseline Array radio telescope, and the Welch Family Farm Forest is here too. The Contoocook River flows north along the eastern border, U.S. Route 202 passes Powder Mill Pond on Concord Road, and Nubanusit Lake lies on the western line. Skatutakee Mountain, at 2,002 feet, is the highest point. Route 123 links the village with Peterborough and Antrim, and Route 137 heads toward Harrisville and Bennington. Middle and high school students attend Great Brook School in Antrim and ConVal Regional High School in Peterborough.
