Welcome to Westmoreland

Westmoreland stretches along the Connecticut River on the western edge of Cheshire County, across from Putney and Dummerston, Vermont, with Walpole, Surry, Keene and Chesterfield on its other sides. State Routes 12 and 63 serve it. Historically an agricultural town with much arable farmland, it was once known as Great Meadow. Westmoreland NH real estate ranges from river-valley farmland to the hills near Hyland Hill on the eastern border.

Living in Westmoreland, NH

The Connecticut River forms Westmoreland's entire western boundary and the state line with Vermont, and the river valley's farmland has long defined the town. Settlers began arriving in 1741 at what was first granted in 1735 as Number 2, the second in a line of Connecticut River fort towns; the town was regranted in 1752 as Westmoreland, named for John Fane, 7th Earl of Westmorland. The Park Hill Meetinghouse, built in 1762, has a Paul Revere bell; it was hauled to its present site by oxen in 1779 and renovated in 1826. Off Poocham Road sits the Pow-wow Rock, a glacial boulder about 12 by 14 by 8 feet, recorded as a historic Indigenous gathering place; Poocham is an Abenaki word for gathering place. Hyland Hill, at 1,510 feet on the eastern border, is the highest point.
