Welcome to Auburn

Auburn is a lake town on the western edge of Rockingham County, sharing Massabesic Lake with Manchester and bordered by Candia, Chester, Derry, Londonderry and Hooksett. NH Route 101 crosses the north of town with Exit 2 inside Auburn. Long a part of Chester known as Chester Woods and Long Meadow, it became its own town in 1845 and took its name from Goldsmith's poem The Deserted Village. Auburn NH real estate wraps around the lake and its many feeder ponds.

Living in Auburn, NH

Massabesic Lake covers more than 2,500 acres in Auburn and Manchester and is Manchester's public water supply, so swimming is not allowed, though half the lake is open to less intrusive boating and a sailing club races there on Sundays. The Massabesic Audubon Center occupies Battery Point on the lake in central Auburn, and Devil's Den, a small cave, lies east of the shore. Sucker Brook enters the lake near the town center after draining Tower Hill Pond, Clark Pond and Little Massabesic Lake, and the Griffin Mill Dam sits on it in the northeast. Each year the Auburn Historical Association floats thousands of rubber ducks down the brook in its Duck Race, and the Griffin Free Public Library holds a big July book sale. Mount Miner, Mine Hill and Mount Misery all overlook the lake at around 580 feet. NH 28 Bypass runs along the west side and NH 121 through the center toward Chester.
