Unity is a Sullivan County town between Claremont and the Lempster hills, made up of four villages: Unity, East Unity, Quaker City and West Unity. Newport, Goshen, Lempster, Acworth, Charlestown and Claremont border it. The old Second New Hampshire Turnpike once carried trade through town between Amherst and Claremont. Unity's four villages sit among hills and farmland, with the town's highest ground, an unnamed summit of 2,011 feet, on the northern boundary. Crescent Lake lies along the southern border and is the source of the Cold River, which runs to the Connecticut at North Walpole. The Little Sugar River drains the western and central parts of town toward North Charlestown, and tributaries of the Sugar River drain the northwest corner and the east toward Claremont. All of Unity is in the Connecticut River watershed. The Second New Hampshire Turnpike, chartered in 1799, passed through town, and by 1810 Unity had grain mills, sawmills, a clothing mill and a distillery, with sheep farming as a principal business. The name dates to 1764, when competing Massachusetts and New Hampshire grants for the former Buckingham territory were settled amicably.
