Welcome to Bennington

Bennington is a small Hillsborough County town on the Contoocook River, bordered by Antrim, Deering, Francestown, Greenfield and Hancock. Its main village sits where NH Routes 31 and 47 meet, and U.S. Route 202 also crosses town. Bennington grew at the Great Falls of the Contoocook and is home to the Monadnock Paper Mills and Crotched Mountain Ski and Ride, so homes for sale in Bennington NH are close to both river and mountain.

Living in Bennington, NH

Bennington was formed in 1842 from parts of Deering, Francestown, Greenfield and Hancock, in an area once called Society Land, and named for the 1777 Battle of Bennington. The Great Falls of the Contoocook drop 70 feet over 1.2 miles, and they powered a gristmill from 1782, a cotton mill from 1810 and later paper machinery near the site of today's Monadnock Paper Mill. The north-flowing river forms Powder Mill Pond on the town's southern boundary. In the east, the town climbs onto the slopes of Crotched Mountain, reaching 2,020 feet, while the summit lies just over the line in Francestown; Crotched Mountain Ski and Ride is on that town line. Bennington is part of the Contoocook Valley Regional School District, with Pierce School in town, Great Brook School in Antrim and ConVal Regional High School in Peterborough.
