Welcome to Atkinson

Atkinson lies on the Massachusetts line in southwestern Rockingham County, with the city of Haverhill directly to the south and Salem, Derry, Hampstead and Plaistow around its other sides. Incorporated in 1767 and named for Colonel Theodore Atkinson, a local landowner, it sits about 34 miles north of Boston. Atkinson NH real estate is organized around Main Street, NH Route 121, a stretch the state has designated the Stage Coach Byway, with Atkinson Academy near its center.

Living in Atkinson, NH

Atkinson Academy was founded in 1787 as a boys' school and began admitting girls in 1791, making it one of the oldest co-educational schools in the country. Its building burned in 1802 and was rebuilt the next year, and that 1803 structure is still part of the school. The Kimball House Museum occupies a house the Reverend Stephen Peabody built in 1772, and the Atkinson Public Library is on Academy Avenue. In 2011 the New Hampshire Scenic and Cultural Byways program named 3.74 miles of Main Street the Stage Coach Byway. NH 111 clips the northern edge of town just south of Island Pond. Hog Hill, north of the town center at 430 feet, is the high point, and the land drains west to the Spicket River and east to the Little River, both flowing south to the Merrimack. Atkinson is part of the Timberlane Regional School District.
