Welcome to Strafford

Strafford takes its name from the county it sits in, and its two main settlements are Center Strafford and Bow Lake Village. Set off from Barrington and incorporated in 1820, the town is divided in half by the Blue Hills Range, crowned by Parker Mountain at 1,420 feet, the most prominent peak in Strafford County. Strafford NH real estate includes land around Bow Lake, a 1,160-acre lake in the southern part of town.

Living in Strafford, NH

Strafford straddles two watersheds. On one side, the Isinglass River and its tributary, the Berrys River, flow east to the Cocheco River in Dover and on to the Piscataqua, while the Big River runs west to the Suncook River in Barnstead and the Merrimack basin. The Blue Hills Range crosses the town from southwest to northeast, with Parker Mountain as its highest summit. Center Strafford was once home to the Austin-Cate Academy, endowed by shoe manufacturer George Cate, whose 1903 building by architect J. Edward Richardson stood on the hill; after it burned in the early 1930s, Richardson designed the brick building that remains. The state later bought the academy property for a National Guard training center. Strafford County itself was organized in 1773 and named for Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford.
