Welcome to Weare

Weare is a large town in northeastern Hillsborough County, set between Manchester and Concord, with Henniker and Hopkinton to the north and Goffstown to the southeast. The Piscataquog River flows through it, held back by Lake Horace in the northwest and Everett Lake in the northeast. Weare NH real estate covers about 60 square miles of hills and river valleys crossed by Routes 77, 114 and 149, named for Meshech Weare, the town's first clerk and later New Hampshire's first governor.

Three summits cluster near the middle of town: Mount Dearborn and Mine Hill, each 1,211 feet, and Mount Wallingford just to the north. Weare center is home to Weare Middle School on East Road, and Center Woods Elementary School sits on Center Road, with high school students attending John Stark Regional High School alongside Henniker. The village of Clinton Grove grew around Clinton Grove Academy, founded in 1834 and named for DeWitt Clinton of Erie Canal fame. Water shapes much of the town. In 1938 the New England hurricane breached the Deering Reservoir dam and floodwater tore past the Weare Reservoir dam, wrecking mills. The Army Corps of Engineers answered with the 2,000-foot Everett Dam, completed in 1963 as part of the Hopkinton-Everett Flood Control Project; it formed Everett Lake and required the village of East Weare to be abandoned. Lake Horace impounds the Piscataquog in the northwest.
