Welcome to Walpole

Walpole is a Connecticut River town in northwestern Cheshire County, facing Westminster and Rockingham, Vermont, across the water, with Charlestown, Langdon, Alstead, Surry and Westmoreland on the New Hampshire side. Routes 12 and 123 serve it. Its central village sits east of Route 12, and the town also includes North Walpole and Drewsville. Walpole NH real estate is known for many architecturally significant old houses, some tied to founder Colonel Benjamin Bellows.

Living in Walpole, NH

Walpole has a long place in Connecticut River history. Colonel Benjamin Bellows, for whom Bellows Falls, Vermont, is named, built a fort here, and in 1785 the first bridge across the Connecticut River was built at Walpole, one of the most famous early spans in the country. Walpole Academy, built in 1831 and attributed to master builder Aaron Prentiss Howland, is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Alcott family lived in Walpole from 1855 to 1857, and the town's abundant lilacs inspired Louisa May Alcott's 1878 book Under the Lilacs; she called Walpole a lovely place high among the hills. The Connecticut forms the western border, the Cold River drains the north part of town, and Derry Hill, at 1,663 feet, is the highest point.
