Welcome to Stark
Stark is a Coos County town on the Upper Ammonoosuc River, and much of it lies within the White Mountain National Forest. NH Route 110 runs through, east from U.S. Route 3 in Groveton and northwest from Route 16 in Berlin. Northumberland is to the west, Milan to the southeast and Dummer to the east. Stark NH real estate is centered on three villages: Stark itself on the river, plus Percy and Crystal.
Living in Stark, NH
Stark takes in the eastern edge of the Pilot Range, with several peaks above 3,000 feet, and its highest point is 3,730-foot Mount Hutchins on the Northumberland line. Life in town runs along the Upper Ammonoosuc River and Route 110, the road between Groveton and Berlin. Stark began as a 1774 grant called Percy, after Hugh Percy, 1st Duke of Northumberland, a name the village of Percy still carries. It was incorporated in 1795 and renamed in 1832 for General John Stark, who wrote the words that became the state motto, Live Free or Die. In 1944 a former Civilian Conservation Corps camp in town became Camp Stark, the only World War II prisoner-of-war camp in New Hampshire; its prisoners cut wood for the Berlin paper mills until it closed in 1946. About 60 square miles in size, Stark is mostly forest.
