Living in Plainfield, NH

Plainfield village lines Route 12A, which runs north to West Lebanon and south toward Claremont. Meriden, on Route 120 between Lebanon and downtown Claremont, grew around Kimball Union Academy, a private preparatory school built in 1813 in what was called Meriden Parish. The Meriden Bird Club, founded by Ernest Harold Baynes in 1910, was the first of its kind in the nation, and the Helen Woodruff Smith Bird Sanctuary and Annie Duncan State Forest are both in town. Plainfield sits on the northern edge of the Cornish Art Colony, active from 1885 to 1930. Maxfield Parrish built his home, The Oaks, and a studio here, and painted the stage backdrop in the Plainfield Town Hall. Blood's Brook and Blow-me-down Brook drain to the Connecticut, and Grantham Mountain, on the Croydon Mountain ridge, is the highest point at 2,660 feet.
