Living in Chesterfield, NH

Chesterfield is known for some of the best farmland in Cheshire County, though it once also made spinning wheel parts and hand tools. The town has two named villages, Spofford and West Chesterfield, and the Connecticut River forms its entire western boundary. Besides Spofford Lake, Chesterfield Gorge Natural Area is a protected landmark, and parts of Pisgah State Park and Wantastiquet Mountain State Forest reach into town. The highest point is Davis Hill, at 1,427 feet near the southern border. The town was the site of Fort Number 1, first in the line of forts along the Connecticut, and was incorporated in 1752 and named for the 4th Earl of Chesterfield. Chesterfield Academy, founded in 1794, was for decades one of the most celebrated schools in the state.
