Welcome to Acworth

Acworth is a rural town in southern Sullivan County, drained by the Cold River and crossed by a single numbered highway, Route 123A. Its neighbors are Unity, Lempster, Marlow, Alstead, Langdon and Charlestown. Settled in 1768 by families from Londonderry, it grew as a farming town with mills on the Cold River. Today homes for sale in Acworth, NH are found along its river valley and the back roads climbing toward Gove Hill.

Living in Acworth, NH

Route 123A follows the Cold River through town and passes the village of South Acworth. The state also maintains several unnumbered roads here, including Cold River Road, Hill Road and part of Charlestown Road. Gove Hill, in the northeast corner, is the highest point at 1,939 feet. Most of Acworth drains to the Cold River and its tributaries, while the northwest corner drains north to the Little Sugar River, and the whole town lies within the Connecticut River watershed. In the 1800s the Cold River powered five sawmills, a gristmill, a woolen factory, a bobbin factory and a peg factory, and a boot and shoe maker worked in town as well. Acworth is also a known source of museum-quality crystals such as beryl. The town is named for Sir Jacob Acworth, a Surveyor of the Royal Navy, and Acworth, Georgia, is named for it.
