Welcome to Durham

Durham is a Strafford County town on Great Bay at the mouth of the Oyster River, best known as the home of the University of New Hampshire. Its densely settled center, around Route 108 and Main Street, surrounds the campus and the clock tower of Thompson Hall, built in 1892. Durham began as the Oyster River Plantation, was part of Dover for its first century and was incorporated in 1732. All Durham NH real estate lies within the Piscataqua River coastal watershed.

The university's roots trace to Benjamin Thompson, who left his family estate, Warner Farm, to the state for an agricultural college; the college moved here from Hanover in 1893 and became UNH in 1923. Off campus, Wagon Hill Farm covers 139 acres from the Oyster River across Route 4 to the Madbury line, with about 6,000 feet of shoreline and trails used for hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, and a wooden wagon at the top of the hill. John Hatch Park holds Wiswall Falls, and the Oyster River Forest and the Durham Historic Association and Museum round out local sites. The Durham Public Library moved into a new building on Madbury Road in 2013. Beech Hill, at 291 feet on the northern border, is the highest point.
