Welcome to Madbury

Madbury is a wedge-shaped Strafford County town that reaches from Cedar Point on Little Bay northwest to the Barrington line, between Dover, Durham and Lee. Once the part of Dover called Barbadoes, after the Caribbean island its settlers traded lumber with, it was incorporated in 1775 and named for the Champernowne family mansion at Modbury in Devon, England. Madbury NH real estate is crossed by Routes 9, 108 and 155 and centered near Hicks Hill.

Living in Madbury, NH

The Bellamy River is the only river of size here, and the Bellamy Reservoir, fed by the river and Mallego Brook, covers 382 acres. Created in 1960 behind an Army Corps of Engineers dam, it provides 60 percent of the water supply for Portsmouth. Barbadoes Pond preserves the town's early name, and a branch of the Oyster River rises in western Madbury. Hicks Hill, at 331 feet near the town center, is the highest point. The railroad through the center of town reached Madbury in the early 1840s, and a depot built in 1881 near Route 155 served the W. H. Elliot Rose Greenhouses, built in 1901, which shipped roses across the Northeast. Moharimet Elementary School, part of the Oyster River Cooperative School District, is on Route 155. Each year Madbury Day brings a parade, community yard sale and barbecue. The listings here show Madbury NH homes for sale.
