Welcome to Troy

Troy lies in southwestern New Hampshire just west of Mount Monadnock, whose summit stands 2 miles northeast of the town line in Jaffrey. Marlborough, Jaffrey, Fitzwilliam, Richmond and Swanzey surround it. NH Route 12 runs through the center of town, 9 miles southeast of Keene, and Route 124 crosses the northeast corner. The central village along Route 12 forms the Troy Village Historic District, the setting for many homes for sale in Troy NH.

Living in Troy, NH

The heart of Troy is its village common, rail-fenced and fronted by the town hall, which was built in 1813 and 1814 as the village meetinghouse; the center is listed on the National Register as the Troy Village Historic District. For nearly a century the town's economy rested on Troy Mills, which began making horse blankets in the mid-19th century and closed in 2002; the large mill complex stands on Monadnock Street. Wooden-ware, pottery and fine building stone were once made here too. Troy is drained by the South Branch of the Ashuelot River, and the south summit of Gap Mountain, at 1,900 feet near the eastern border, is the highest point. Troy was set off from Marlborough in 1815, and its name was suggested at a time when Samuel Wilson, famous as Uncle Sam, lived in Troy, New York, and at least seven of his relatives lived in town.
