Welcome to Monroe

Monroe is a narrow Grafton County town squeezed between the Connecticut River on the west and the long ridge of Gardner Mountain on the east, directly across from Barnet, Vermont. NH Route 135 runs the length of town beside the river, linking it to Littleton to the north and Bath to the south. Monroe NH real estate sits in this river valley, which was carved out of the original town of Lyman and incorporated separately in 1854.

Living in Monroe, NH

Life in the town of Monroe, NH follows the river. Comerford Dam, built from 1928 to 1930 on the old Fifteen Mile Falls, holds back the Connecticut and generates power for New England; at its completion it was the largest retaining wall in the United States. Before the dams, the river fell 367 feet in 15 miles between Dalton and Bath, and Monroe still has the narrows, where slate walls pinch the Connecticut to a few rods. Peter Paddleford, inventor of the Paddleford truss for covered bridges, built a 300-foot covered bridge here to McIndoes, Vermont, in 1833. The Deer Islands lie in the river, Coppermine Road recalls old copper mines, and parts of the Ammonoosuc Gold Fields reach into town. Signal Mountain, at 2,299 feet, is the high point and a longtime surveying landmark.
