Welcome to Groton

Groton, New Hampshire is a town in Grafton County in the hills just upstream of Newfound Lake, lying fully within the Merrimack River watershed. The Cockermouth River crosses the center of town from west to east on its way to Newfound Lake, and a branch of the Baker River runs through the north. Its villages are Groton and North Groton, and Tenney Mountain's summit, at 2,350 feet, is the town's highest point.

Living in Groton, NH

Set in the hills above Newfound Lake, the town of Groton, NH has no lake frontage of its own. Its best-known place is the 272-acre Sculptured Rocks Natural Area on Sculptured Rocks Road, where the Cockermouth River carved a narrow granite canyon full of potholes and channels on its way to the lake; it has been a local swimming hole for generations. Early farmers found the uneven land suitable for corn and potatoes, and by 1859 local streams powered ten sawmills and two gristmills. The Palermo Mine in North Groton is noted for its minerals but is not open to the public, and the town approved a wind farm in 2009. Tenney Mountain's summit ridge sits on the Plymouth line, and cell coverage thins on Groton's back roads.
