Welcome to Stoddard

Stoddard covers 53 square miles of hills and lakes in northeastern Cheshire County, bordered by Washington, Windsor, Antrim, Nelson, Sullivan, Gilsum and Marlow. New Hampshire Route 9 crosses it from northeast to southwest and Route 123 runs through the town center. Between the 1840s and 1873 four glassworks operated here, and amber and olive-green Stoddard glass is still prized by collectors. Much of today's Stoddard NH real estate sits near Highland Lake, Island Pond and Granite Lake.

Living in Stoddard, NH

Stoddard straddles a watershed line. Its western side drains through tributaries of the Ashuelot River to the Connecticut, while the central and eastern parts flow to the North Branch of the Contoocook River and on to the Merrimack. Highland Lake and Island Pond lie in the northeast, and Granite Lake sits on the southern border. The Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway passes through the western side of town near Center Pond and climbs toward Pitcher Mountain, whose 2,162-foot summit is the highest point in Stoddard. The town's glass history is tied to two settlements: South Stoddard, near today's junction of Routes 9 and 123, and Mill Village, near the present town center. Forests fueled the furnaces and local sand, with its trace minerals, gave the glass its colors. The industry faded in the early 1870s.
