Welcome to Barrington

Barrington is a woodland, farm and commuter town in Strafford County, incorporated in 1722 and named for colonial governor Samuel Shute of Barrington Hall. The Calef Highway, NH Route 125, bisects the town, and the Isinglass and Bellamy rivers drain it. Living in Barrington, NH

The commercial center is East Barrington, built around the junction of Routes 9 and 125. The highway is named for a 19th-century state senator whose relatives founded a general store in 1869 that still operates. Swains Lake and Mendum's Pond are in the southern part of town. The Isinglass River and its tributaries once powered grist, fulling and saw mills, and iron smelting had made Barrington the third largest town in the state by 1810. Beauty Hill, a 374-foot summit, takes its name from the scenery, while Bumfagging Hill, at 601 feet, is the highest named summit. Part of the original grant, the Two Mile Streak, was set aside for workers at the Lamprey River Iron Works. Strafford was split off in 1820, roughly halving the town's land, and the listings on this page show current Barrington, New Hampshire homes for sale.
