Welcome to Columbia

Columbia is a mountainous Coos County town on the Connecticut River, with Lemington and Bloomfield, Vermont, across the water, Colebrook to the north and Stratford to the south. U.S. Route 3 follows the river through town, and the east and west branches of Simms Stream drain its hills. For anyone weighing Columbia NH real estate, the defining features are the river valley along Route 3 and Blue Mountain, whose 3,720-foot summit is the high point.

Living in Columbia, NH

Columbia covers about 61 square miles, almost all of it land, and every part of it drains to the Connecticut River. The town began as a 1762 grant named Preston, was regranted in 1770 as Cockburn Town after Sir James Cockburn, and was incorporated in 1797. In 1811, in the lead-up to the War of 1812, Governor John Langdon renamed it Columbia. Although the terrain is steep, the soil proved good, and early residents made maple sugar and cut lumber that was rafted down the Connecticut to market. By 1859 the town had four sawmills, three gristmills, two clapboard machines and a starch mill. Neighbors include Dixville to the northeast and the unincorporated places of Erving's Location and Odell to the southeast. Titus Hill Road climbs from Colebrook village to high farmland in Columbia.
