Welcome to Newton

Newton is a small town in southern Rockingham County on the Massachusetts line, with Merrimac, Massachusetts to the south and Plaistow to the southwest. Incorporated as Newtown in 1749, simply because it was a new town, it took its shorter name in 1846. Its villages and place names include Newton, Newton Junction, Rowes Corner, Sargent Corners and Crane Crossing. Newton NH real estate covers about 10 square miles of land drained by several small rivers.

Living in Newton, NH

Newton was carved from land that passed through Salisbury and Amesbury in Massachusetts and then South Hampton before Governor Benning Wentworth incorporated it in 1749, the sixth town granted from the Masonian land purchase of 1746. Today it is a town of small villages rather than one center: Newton itself, Newton Junction, Rowes Corner, Sargent Corners and Crane Crossing. All of it lies in the Merrimack River watershed. The Little River drains the southwest, the East Meadow River the southern corner, and the Powwow River with its tributary the Back River drains the rest of town. Open water is limited to about 0.2 square miles. The high point is Brandy Brow Hill, 289 feet, right on the southern corner at the state line. NH Route 108 connects Newton south through Plaistow to Haverhill and north toward Exeter.
