Welcome to Dummer

Dummer is a forested town near the geographic center of Coos County, crossed by NH Route 16 between Milan to the south and Errol to the northeast. It is best known for Pontook Reservoir, popular with canoeists, kayakers and birdwatchers. Millsfield lies to the north, Cambridge to the east and Stark to the southwest. Homes for sale in Dummer, NH are spread along Route 16 and the river, with the old village of Paris in the west.

Living in Dummer, NH

Governor John Wentworth granted Dummer in 1773 to a group of Portsmouth investors that included his father, Mark Hunking Wentworth, and named it for Massachusetts Governor William Dummer. Nobody settled until 1812, when William Leighton arrived from Farmington, and the town was incorporated in 1848. The mountainous land was poor for farming, but its forests and the Upper Ammonoosuc River supported two sawmills by 1859, and log drives on the Androscoggin fed the paper mills downstream in Berlin. Pontook Dam, which forms Pontook Reservoir, was rebuilt in the mid-1980s to generate hydroelectric power. The western third of town, where the former community of Paris lies along Phillips Brook, drains to the Upper Ammonoosuc and the Connecticut, while the eastern two thirds drain to the Androscoggin. Cow Mountain, at 2,289 feet in the north, is the high point.
