Living in Canaan, NH

Canaan was settled in the winter of 1766 to 1767, and the arrival of the Northern Railroad in 1847 brought water-powered mills to its streams. The Great Canaan Fire of 1923 burned 48 homes and businesses in Canaan Village, also called East Canaan. Today the Northern Rail Trail follows the old rail line through town, and a mountain road leads to a trailhead in Cardigan Mountain State Forest, where trails on the west slope climb to the 3,155-foot bare-rock summit of Mount Cardigan. On the water side, Goose Pond lies in the northwest and Derby Pond sits below the unnamed ridge in the northeast that is the town's high point. Local sights include the Canaan Historical Museum and Canaan Motor Club, an auto racetrack. Mascoma Valley Regional High School is in Canaan.
