Welcome to Deering

Deering is a hill town in northwestern Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, bordered by Hillsborough, Henniker, Weare, Francestown, Bennington and Antrim. The Contoocook River forms its western boundary, and State Route 149 crosses the town between Hillsborough and Weare. Incorporated in 1774 and named for the wife of Governor John Wentworth, Deering has long been a place of farms, woods and hills, and Deering NH real estate is spread across that rural landscape.

Living in Deering, NH

Deering was first settled around 1765, and Governor John Wentworth named it for the maiden name of his wife, Frances Deering Wentworth, two years after he had given her first name to neighboring Francestown. Its hills and valleys suited farming, and by the mid-1800s the town also had sawmills, a gristmill and a clothing factory. The land divides between two rivers: the eastern two-thirds drain to tributaries of the Piscataquog, which flows east to Manchester, while the western third drains to the Contoocook along the town line. Clark Summit, just west of the town center, is the high point at 1,570 feet. Route 149 is the main road through town. Deering shares School Administrative Unit 34 with Hillsborough, and students attend the Hillsboro-Deering elementary, middle and high schools.
