Welcome to Alstead

Alstead sits in northern Cheshire County along the Cold River, bordered by Acworth, Marlow, Gilsum, Surry, Walpole and Langdon. State Routes 123, 123A and 12A serve the town, and Feuer State Forest lies within it. Once called Paper Mill Village, Alstead was the site of one of New Hampshire's first paper mills, founded on the Cold River in 1793. Alstead NH real estate today includes village homes, farmland and property near Lake Warren in the eastern part of town.

Living in Alstead, NH

The Cold River drains Alstead, and the whole town is in the Connecticut River watershed. Lake Warren lies in the east, and Smith Hill, at 1,795 feet, is the highest point. Streams and ponds once powered a variety of small mills, and a turbine water mill at East Alstead is probably the last of its type in the region. The Beaux-Arts Shedd-Porter Memorial Library, built in 1909 and 1910, was a gift to Alstead and Langdon from native son John G. Shedd, president of Marshall Field's in Chicago. Another native, Charles M. Vilas, gave a public recreation area, a school building and the only carillon in Cheshire County. In October 2005 a severe flood on the Cold River and Warren Brook damaged property in Alstead, Langdon and Walpole and washed out four miles of Route 123.
