Welcome to Newington

Newington sits on a peninsula in Rockingham County framed by Great Bay to the west, Little Bay to the northwest and the Piscataqua River to the northeast, with Dover, Portsmouth, Greenland, Newmarket, Durham and Eliot, Maine as neighbors. It is home to Portsmouth International Airport at Pease, the New Hampshire Air National Guard and the 110-acre Old Town Center Historic District. Newington NH real estate is limited, since much of the town is airport, industry, retail or water.

Living in Newington, NH

About a third of Newington is water, and its shoreline wraps Great Bay, Little Bay and the Piscataqua. The Great Bay National Wildlife Refuge is the town's best-known natural site. U.S. Route 4 and NH Route 16 cross town, and Fox Point once anchored a 1794 bridge across Little Bay to Dover by way of Goat Island. The Old Town Center Historic District, on the National Register, includes the 1712 meetinghouse with its row of horse sheds and a parsonage from about 1725 near the Town Forest. The town's highest ground, 130 feet, is near Newington Cemetery in the center. Roughly 60 percent of the former Pease Air Force Base lay in Newington. Commercial growth spread in from Portsmouth starting in the 1970s, including The Crossings shopping center, and power plants and port businesses line the Piscataqua.
