Welcome to Washington

Washington is a hilly, forested town in southeastern Sullivan County, set on a highland watershed divide between the Connecticut and Merrimack rivers. Goshen, Bradford, Hillsborough, Windsor, Stoddard, Marlow and Lempster ring its borders. With 26 lakes and ponds and Pillsbury State Park, it has long been a resort area. Washington NH real estate is spread across that lake and woodland country, below a town common that is the highest town center in the state.

Living in Washington, NH

The Washington Town Common sits at 1,507 feet, and around it stand the Town Hall, built as a meetinghouse in 1787 and other early nineteenth-century buildings. Lovewell Mountain, northeast of the center, is the town's highest point at 2,496 feet. Pillsbury State Park is in Washington. On the western side, the Ashuelot River drains toward the Connecticut and includes Ashuelot Pond in the southwest. Bog Brook runs north to south through the center into Highland Lake near the southern line, and Beards Brook and Woodward Brook drain the east, all part of the Contoocook and Merrimack watershed. Mills once turned out lumber, shingles, bobbins and washboards on the town's streams, sheep farms were an important business, and in the railroad era hotels went up on the lakes and ponds.
