Welcome to Hinsdale

Hinsdale occupies the far southwestern corner of New Hampshire, with the Connecticut River and Vermont to the west and Massachusetts to the south. A bridge links it to Brattleboro, Vermont, and the main village sits where NH Routes 63 and 119 meet. Chartered in 1753, the town has long mixed farmland with paper mills. Hinsdale NH real estate also borders conservation land in Pisgah State Park and Wantastiquet Mountain State Forest.

Living in Hinsdale, NH

Water covers more than 9 percent of Hinsdale, and the whole town lies in the Connecticut River watershed: roughly the northwestern two-thirds drains by small streams straight to the Connecticut, while the southeastern third feeds the Ashuelot River. Wantastiquet Mountain, at 1,378 feet, rises on the northern boundary and overlooks the river and Brattleboro. Part of Pisgah State Park lies in the northeast of town. The village has some notable firsts. The post office on Main Street is the oldest in the United States to operate continuously in the same building, and in 1875 George A. Long built a self-propelled steam tricycle in a Hinsdale machine shop, earning one of the nation's earliest automobile patents. Tobacco was grown here through the 19th century, and the Hinsdale Greyhound Park operated from 1959 to 2008.
