Welcome to Sharon

Sharon is a Hillsborough County town in New Hampshire's Monadnock area, a hilly stretch of about 16 square miles between Peterborough to the north and Rindge to the southwest, with Temple, New Ipswich and Jaffrey around its other sides. Temple Mountain forms its eastern boundary for several miles, and branches of the Contoocook River rise in the southeast. Houses for sale in Sharon NH sit in uneven, partly mountainous country that was long devoted to farming.

Living in Sharon, NH

Sharon was first settled in 1738 as part of Peterborough Slip, a strip of land that included Temple until 1768. Known as Sliptown for decades, it asked to join Peterborough in 1777 and was turned down, then incorporated as Sharon in 1791, named for Sharon, Connecticut, where many settlers came from. In the mid-1800s the town had three sawmills, though farming was the main work. The land is all recorded as dry ground, with several branches of the Contoocook River beginning near the southeastern corner and flowing north. Holt Peak on Temple Mountain, at 2,045 feet, is the highest point and anchors the ridge along the eastern border. For many years Sharon was home to the Sharon Arts Center, a nonprofit arts organization that closed in 2019.
