Welcome to Candia

Candia sits on the western edge of Rockingham County, bordering Merrimack County, with Deerfield, Raymond, Chester, Auburn and Hooksett around it. Once part of Chester and known as Charmingfare, it was incorporated in 1763 and named for the island of Candia, now Crete, where Governor Benning Wentworth had once been held prisoner. Candia NH real estate spreads among three villages, Candia, Candia Four Corners and East Candia, with the Route 101 freeway crossing the south of town.

Living in Candia, NH

Candia proper lies near the northern border, Candia Four Corners near the center where Routes 27 and 43 meet, and East Candia near the eastern line. Route 27 runs east to west from Hooksett to Raymond, Route 43 runs north from the single Route 101 interchange to Deerfield, and the old Portsmouth Branch railbed is now part of the Rockingham Recreational Trail. Most of the town drains east through the North Branch River to the Lamprey, while the south drains toward Massabesic Lake in Auburn. Hall Mountain, at 941 feet, is the high point, inside the part of Bear Brook State Park that reaches into northwestern Candia. Local landmarks include the Fitts Museum of the Candia Historical Society, Charmingfare Farm, Candia Vineyards, Candia Woods Golf Links and the Stephen Clay Homestead. The Henry W. Moore School teaches kindergarten through grade 8 near the Four Corners.
