Welcome to Chester

The town of Chester, NH lies in the western part of Rockingham County, crossed by NH 102 between Derry and Raymond and by NH 121 between Auburn and Hampstead. Incorporated in 1722 from a grant in what settlers called the Chesnut Country, it once covered more than 120 square miles before Candia, part of Hooksett and Auburn were set off. The Exeter River rises here. Chester NH real estate today is spread across a rural town of about 26 square miles.

Living in Chester, NH

Chester is a land-locked upland town with almost no open water, only about a tenth of a square mile, yet it is the headwaters of the Exeter River. The Exeter and its tributary Towle Brook drain most of town toward the coast, while the western edge drains toward Massabesic Lake and the Merrimack. Harantis Lake sits near the town's high ground, an unnamed hill west of Bell Hill with two knobs of at least 635 feet. Three state routes meet in the center: NH 102 follows Derry Road and Raymond Road, NH 121 follows Chester Street and Haverhill Road, and NH 121A begins just east of the center and heads along Sandown Road. Auburn, once the Long Meadows section of Chester, became its own town in 1845. Chester Academy, the public school, serves elementary and middle grades, and high school students attend Pinkerton Academy in Derry. The former Chester College, once White Pines College, was also here.
