Living in New Durham, NH

Living in New Durham means a town split between two watersheds. The north holds Merrymeeting Lake and its outlet, the Merrymeeting River, which flows west to Lake Winnipesaukee; the south drains through the headwaters of the Cocheco River and its tributary, the Ela River, toward the Atlantic at Portsmouth. Merrymeeting Lake is on N.H. Fish and Game's short list of lakes managed for lake trout and salmon, and the Powder Mill Fish Hatchery is on Merrymeeting Road. Lake Winnipesaukee Golf Club, a public par-72 course just south of Alton, is in New Durham. The town was granted in 1749 as Cochecho Township, settled in 1750 mostly by colonists from Durham, and incorporated as New Durham in 1762. The Cocheco Railroad opened through town in 1849.
