Living in Francestown, NH

The village at the center of town holds the town offices at 27 Main Street, the Francestown Meetinghouse and the George Holmes Bixby Memorial Library, and the Francestown Town Hall and Academy and Town Common Historic District preserves the old civic core. The Levi Woodbury Homestead recalls Levi Woodbury, a New Hampshire governor and U.S. Supreme Court justice with Francestown roots. In the early 1800s the town sat on the Second New Hampshire Turnpike, then the only route between Boston and Vermont, and collected a toll of a cent a mile from coaches and wagons. High-quality soapstone was quarried here from 1792 until 1912. Crotched Mountain, at 2,066 feet, is the highest point and forms part of the western boundary, while streams across town feed the Piscataquog River. Routes 47 and 136 are the main roads through town.
