Welcome to Barnstead

Living in Barnstead, NH

Living in Barnstead means rolling ground, the Suncook Lakes and three villages. The land is not mountainous but forms large swells, historically good for grazing, and the highest point is 1,190 feet on the northern border near Locke's Corner. The Suncook River and its tributaries once powered the town's mills, which by 1859 included a woolen factory and seven sawmills. Route 28 is the main north-south road toward Alton, Wolfeboro, Pittsfield and Suncook; Route 126 begins in Center Barnstead and heads southeast to Strafford and Barrington; and Route 107 crosses the western corner between Pittsfield and Laconia. The town was incorporated in 1767, and its name combines Barnstable, Massachusetts, and Hempstead, New York, where many early settlers came from.
