Welcome to Newfields

Newfields is a small Rockingham County town on the west bank of the Squamscott River, between Newmarket, Stratham, Exeter and Epping. Settled in 1638, it belonged to Exeter and then Newmarket, where it was long called South Newmarket, before taking the name Newfields in honor of a library gift. Newfields NH real estate centers on a village of handsome old houses along NH Route 85 and the river, with Routes 87 and 108 also crossing the town.

Living in Newfields, NH

The village grew up on either side of an ancient Squamscot trail. When a bridge was built across the Squamscott to Stratham in 1775, shortening the trip to Exeter, the new route bypassed the village center, and that detour is credited with preserving old Newfields. Garrison houses were once common here as protection in the colonial era. The Boston and Maine Railroad reached the village in 1841. In 1880 Dr. John M. Brodhead gave the town his library and $10,000 on condition that it adopt the Newfields name. Wesleyan Academy opened here in 1817 before moving to Wilbraham, Massachusetts, and its site is now Newfields Elementary School. The Piscassic River drains the west side of town toward the Lamprey, the Squamscott forms the eastern boundary, and Oakland Hill, at 240 feet on the southern border, is the highest point.
