Living in Grafton, NH

Grafton was granted in 1761, re-granted in 1769 and incorporated in 1778, and it shares its name with the county: both honor Augustus FitzRoy, 3rd Duke of Grafton, a relative of Governor Benning Wentworth. The town grew on subsistence farming, small industry and mining, and mica mines and granite quarries once dotted the landscape, the best known being Ruggles Mine. Most of Grafton drains east through the Smith River, a tributary of the Pemigewasset and part of the Merrimack watershed, while brooks on the western side run toward the Mascoma River and the Connecticut. Grafton Pond sits in the western part of town, and Melvin Mountain, at 2,177 feet, is the high point. NH Route 4A crosses the southwest corner. A three-person select board governs the town, and it belongs to the Mascoma Valley Regional School District.
