Welcome to Swanzey

Swanzey lies just south of Keene in Cheshire County, along the southwest-flowing Ashuelot River. Besides the town center it includes the villages of East Swanzey, West Swanzey, North Swanzey and Westport, and NH Routes 10, 12 and 32 cross the town. Swanzey is known for its four covered bridges and for The Old Homestead, Denman Thompson's stage play restaged each summer at the Potash Bowl. Swanzey NH real estate spreads across those five settlements.

Living in Swanzey, NH

The Ashuelot River shapes Swanzey. Connected by the Ashuelot Railroad, West Swanzey grew as a textile mill village, while East Swanzey made wooden buckets for generations. The four covered bridges are among the town's best-known landmarks. Each summer the play The Old Homestead, about the Yankee farmer Joshua Whitcomb made famous by Swanzey's own Denman Thompson, is performed at the Potash Bowl, a natural outdoor amphitheater. The town's highest point is the 1,423-foot summit of Franklin Mountain on the Winchester line. Dillant-Hopkins Airport, which serves Keene, is in Swanzey. Only a small share of the town's 45 square miles is water. Swanzey began in 1733 as Lower Ashuelot, a Massachusetts fort town, and was regranted in 1753 as Swanzey, probably for settlers' ties to Swansea in Wales.
