Welcome to Sullivan

Sullivan is a small Cheshire County town northeast of Keene, formed in 1787 from parts of Gilsum, Keene, Nelson and Stoddard and named for General John Sullivan. It borders Gilsum, Stoddard, Nelson, Roxbury and Keene, and New Hampshire Route 9 crosses it. East Sullivan and Ellisville are its villages. Despite the name, Sullivan, New Hampshire is in Cheshire County, not Sullivan County, and its brooks all drain to the Ashuelot River.

Living in Sullivan, NH

Farming was the chief occupation in Sullivan from its early years, and the town covers about 18.7 square miles of land laced with brooks. Ferry Brook, Meetinghouse Brook, Spaulding Brook and Otter Brook drain it, all part of the Ashuelot River watershed flowing to the Connecticut. Boynton Hill, at 1,739 feet in the northern part of town, is the highest point. Beyond the main settlement, the villages of East Sullivan and Ellisville are the other named places. Sullivan has a notable distinction in New Hampshire history: in 1867 it became the first town in the state to dedicate a monument to its soldiers lost in the Civil War. Route 9 carries traffic through town between Keene to the southwest and Stoddard to the northeast, giving Sullivan a direct road link to the county seat.
