Welcome to Middleton

Middleton is a small Strafford County town granted by the Masonian Proprietors in 1749 and incorporated in 1778, named for Sir Charles Middleton, 1st Baron Barham. It lies on the colonial road between the Seacoast and Governor John Wentworth's Kingswood estate in Wolfeboro, a route that survives through town as Kings Highway. The Moose Mountains rise along its line with Brookfield, and Middleton NH real estate is reached by NH Route 153.

Living in Middleton, NH

The old Town Hall on King's Highway began as a 1795 meetinghouse on Ridge Road. It was moved in 1812, raised on its new site and given a town hall underneath, and inside is a wrap-around landscape mural of trees and scenery painted by John Avery in 1811. Sunrise Lake, once known as the Old Dump Reservoir, holds most of the town's water near its southern corner and drains south toward the Cocheco River in Farmington. The rest of the town drains east toward the Branch River, a tributary of the Salmon Falls River, and Jones Brook runs through the center. The Moose Mountains carry a string of peaks between 1,600 and 1,700 feet, including the town high point at 1,670 feet. Brookfield was part of Middleton until 1794. The soil is rocky, and early farms turned to cider and maple syrup. Browse homes for sale in Middleton NH in the listings here.
