Welcome to Salem

Salem is in the southwest corner of Rockingham County, where the Massachusetts line forms its southern and southeastern border. As the first town along Interstate 93 northbound in New Hampshire, it has become a commercial hub for the northern edge of Greater Boston, anchored by the Mall at Rockingham Park and Tuscan Village. Salem NH real estate ranges from suburban neighborhoods built since the 1950s to new condos in mixed-use development on the former racetrack site.

Living in Salem, NH

NH Route 28 carries Salem's long commercial strip, and a second business zone sits off Exit 2 on I-93; NH 38, NH 97 and NH 111 cross town as well. Tuscan Village, under construction since 2017 on the site of the old Rockingham Park horse track, mixes retail, medical offices, condos and apartments. Canobie Lake on the western boundary is home to Canobie Lake Park, opened in 1902 by a street railway company and still running. The Spicket River and Policy Brook drain the town toward the Merrimack, Arlington Mill Reservoir lies in the north and World End Pond in the southeast. The old Manchester and Lawrence rail line is now a rail trail. The 1738 north parish meetinghouse, later the town hall, houses the Salem Historical Society museum. Gordons Hill, at 366 feet, is the high point, and Southern New Hampshire University runs a satellite campus here.
