Welcome to Effingham

Effingham is a town in Carroll County, New Hampshire, bounded on the east by the Maine state line and on the north by the Ossipee River. Its villages are Effingham Falls, Effingham (Lord's Hill), Center Effingham (Drake's Corner) and South Effingham, and state routes 25 and 153 serve the town. Pine River State Forest is in the south, and Effingham NH real estate reaches from those villages to the edges of Province Lake and Ossipee Lake.

Living in Effingham, NH

Living in the town of Effingham, NH means hills, rivers and small shares of two lakes. Province Lake lies partly within the town to the south, and Broad Bay and Berry Bay of Ossipee Lake reach into the north. Green Mountain, at 1,884 feet, is the highest point. The Ossipee River and its tributaries, the Pine and South rivers, drain the town, and the Ossipee River subwatershed, partly in Effingham, holds the largest stratified-drift aquifer in New Hampshire; much of Effingham's land serves as aquifer recharge area. Effingham Falls grew in the 1800s as a small mill town with a woolen factory and sawmills. A state historical marker notes that New Hampshire's first normal school opened in 1830 in the Effingham Union Academy building.
