Welcome to Northumberland

Northumberland is a western Coos County town just north of Lancaster, with the Connecticut River and Vermont along its western edge and Stratford to the north and Stark to the east. Its main village is Groveton, where the Upper Ammonoosuc River passes under a covered bridge on its way to the Connecticut. Homes for sale in Northumberland, NH line U.S. Route 3 along the river and NH Route 110, which runs east from the town toward Stark.

Living in Northumberland, NH

Groveton grew as a rail junction, once linking the Grand Trunk Railway and the Boston, Concord and Montreal Railroad, and it is still where a New Hampshire and Vermont Railroad line ends at the St. Lawrence and Atlantic. The town's economy moved from corn, potatoes, starch mills and leather to lumber and paper, until the Wausau Paper mill closed in 2007. History runs deep here: north of the Cape Horn ridge near the Connecticut lie the remains of Fort Wentworth, built by the New Hampshire Militia in 1755, and the meeting house the town voted for in 1797 still stands beside U.S. Route 3. Cape Horn State Forest fills the middle of town, and Morse Mountain, Cape Horn, Moore Mountain and Spaulding Hill rise above the valley. The high point, at 2,860 feet, is on a spur of the Pilot Range on the eastern boundary.
