Welcome to Boscawen

Just north of Concord, Boscawen, New Hampshire is bounded on the east by the Merrimack River and drained by its tributary, the Contoocook. U.S. Routes 3 and 4 serve the town, which is home to the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery and the Hannah Duston Memorial State Historic Site. The generally level land under Boscawen NH real estate was once known for apple, pear and cherry orchards.

Living in Boscawen, NH

Boscawen's mostly level ground made good farmland, and the town became noted for its orchards, while the Merrimack and Contoocook rivers powered a cotton mill, a woolen factory, sawmills and a chair and match factory. The mill village of Fisherville, now Penacook, straddled the river border with Concord. The Northern Railroad came through in 1846, and around the same time the local postmaster issued rare provisional stamps reading PAID 5 CENTS. The Boscawen Public Library of 1913 was designed by Boston architect Guy Lowell. The Hannah Duston Memorial State Historic Site marks an island at the confluence of the Contoocook and Merrimack, and the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery is also in town. The highest point, about 930 feet, is an unnamed summit at Raleigh Farm near the northern border.
